The European Council has invited the European Commission and the Member States to develop a Macro-regional Strategy for the Atlantic by June 2027. In preparing this new strategy, existing macro-regional strategies for the Baltic, Danube, Adriatic-Ionian and Alpine regions, as well as the Atlantic Action Plan developed by DG MARE, will be considered.
The announcement was made by the European Council on 18 December 2025, following a meeting in Brussels that also addressed key issues such as the next Multiannual Financial Framework, EU enlargement and institutional reforms.
