The DiadSea project, supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area, has been officially endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade. This recognition comes under the programme “Fisheries Strategies for Changing Oceans and Resilient Ecosystems by 2030,” supporting Challenge 3 (Sustainable Blue Food) and Challenge 4 (Sustainable Ocean Economy).
Representing regions from Portugal, France, Spain, and Ireland, DiadSea focuses on improving the management and conservation of diadromous migratory fish in the Atlantic Ocean. These species live in both fresh and saltwater and are particularly vulnerable to climate change, requiring shared and cross-border solutions.
On the UN Ocean Decade website, DiadSea is highlighted for its role in protecting these fish and their habitats. “By protecting these fish and their habitats, DiadSea will not only help the environment but also bring benefits to local communities, both economically and culturally,” the host programme states.
This endorsement opens the door for DiadSea representatives to collaborate with scientists, fishers, resource managers, policymakers, and community practitioners from other ocean basins. Together, they aim to develop frameworks that assess vulnerabilities and define actionable adaptation strategies for resilient fisheries and ecosystems.
