On 26 November, the Biotechnology Pole of Galicia hosted the kick-off meeting of the Biochains Atlantic project, launched for optimising algal value chains in the Atlantic Region. This first meeting allowed the project partners, led by the Spanish institution Bioga, to coordinate their efforts and define the implementation plan.
Over the coming months, Biochains Atlantic will work to improve and consolidate the production, processing and use of microalgae and macroalgae in Spain, Portugal, France and Ireland.
The main challenge identified by the project is the absence of well-structured algae value chains that would link all the key players involved in turning algae into products for the food and cosmetics industries.
