Summary
Currently, consumers’ demand has been increasingly leaning towards natural, sustainable, and health-promoting ingredients in both the cosmetics and food industry, fuelling the importance of algae valorisation in the Atlantic Region market. However, an important constraint is the lack of organised algal value chains that would support the connection of various actors implicated in valorising micro- and macro algae in the food and cosmetics sectors, from biomass suppliers to end-users.
BIOCHAINS Atlantic focuses on achieving an efficient and sustainable utilisation of micro and macroalgae in the Atlantic Area by organising and optimising the entire algal biomass value chains.
It involves stakeholders mapping and cooperation, challenges analysis, models development powered with intelligent digital tools, and the generation of market-oriented prototypes for the cosmetics and food sectors, while fostering collaboration across Spain, Portugal, France and Ireland.
By trying to align industry needs with environmental and market demands, the project promotes sustainable and economic growth in the algae-based biomass industry.
