The French institution GIP Littoral, lead partner of the Smart Coast project, supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, is updating its Données Plages tool in anticipation of the 2026 beach season. This open-data platform provides comprehensive information about beaches in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, including geolocation and beach characteristics; accessibility for people with reduced mobility; parking availability, a photo library, and the lifeguard duty schedules.
The new version will prioritise real-time access conditions, such as car park occupancy, and aim to guide visitors toward less crowded spots during peak summer months, when visitor concentrations are highest.
As part of the Smart Coast project, GIP Littoral is sharing this updated tool with partners across the Atlantic Area, exploring its potential adaptation in other regions, including Cantabria (Spain), Algarve and Azores (Portugal), and the Southern Region of Ireland.
The partnership remains committed to addressing the challenges of high tourism pressure along the Atlantic coastline. Additional actions will be rolled out by 2027 to improve visitor management and enhance the welcome experience.
