For the first time, the European Commission, through DG MARE, is launching the joint Atlantic–WestMED Project Awards, bringing together stakeholders from the Atlantic and Western Mediterranean blue economy communities. The awards recognise outstanding projects and investments that contribute to the shared priorities of the Atlantic and WestMED sea basin strategies. Organisations, initiatives and partnerships working towards a sustainable and innovative blue economy are invited to apply.

Categories
Blue Skills and Ocean Literacy
This category recognises activities that strengthen workforce development across maritime sectors, including coastal communities, through quality education, training and lifelong learning opportunities. Eligible initiatives may include:
- Upskilling and reskilling programmes for emerging technologies;
- Promotion of maritime careers;
- Research and innovation collaborations;
- Actions supporting the mutual recognition of qualifications and cross-border mobility.
Maritime Spatial Planning
This category rewards activities that contribute to the sustainable, integrated and evidence-based management of marine spaces. Eligible initiatives may include:
- Development and implementation of Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) processes and tools;
- Data collection, mapping and digital solutions for spatial planning;
- Actions that enhance coordination among sectors such as fisheries, aquaculture, offshore energy, maritime transport and nature conservation.
Biodiversity, Healthy Oceans and Resilient Coasts
This category recognises activities that protect, restore and enhance marine and coastal ecosystems while strengthening their long-term resilience. Eligible initiatives may include:
- Ecosystem restoration and conservation measures;
- Actions to improve coastal resilience;
- Initiatives combating marine pollution;
- Sustainable management of marine and coastal resources.
Maritime transport, green ports, energy transition
This category rewards activities that support the decarbonisation and sustainability of maritime transport and port operations while accelerating the transition to clean and efficient energy systems. Eligible initiatives may include:
- Development and deployment of low- and zero-emission vessels;
- Alternative fuel solutions;
- Energy-efficient technologies for shipping and port activities;
- Innovative approaches supporting the blue economy's energy transition.

For the winners
Award winners will be recognised during the Atlantic–WestMED Stakeholder Conference, taking place on 16 September 2026 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
In addition to receiving a trophy and certificate, winners will benefit from:
- A dedicated coaching session with experts to support the further development and scaling-up of their initiative;
- Access to the EU Sea Basin Strategies networks covering the Atlantic, Western Mediterranean and Black Sea regions;
- Increased visibility through Atlantic and WestMED communication and promotional channels.
