The AtlanticOnBike – EuroVelo 1 project, led by the Conseil Départemental des Pyrénées-Atlantiques and co-funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 REGIOSTARS Awards under the category "A Connected Europe".
Recognised as a flagship initiative for sustainable mobility and green tourism, the project has helped develop and promote EuroVelo 1 – the Atlantic Coast Route, one of Europe's longest and most spectacular cycling routes. Stretching from the North Cape in Norway to the Algarve in Portugal, the route offers a unique cycling experience while encouraging environmentally friendly travel across the Atlantic regions.
By improving infrastructure, strengthening cooperation and promoting cycling tourism, AtlanticOnBike – EuroVelo 1 connects rural, coastal and urban areas through a continuous and safe cycling corridor. The project contributes to low-carbon mobility, sustainable tourism and greater territorial cohesion by linking regions across Europe through a shared active mobility network.
Selected from 274 applications, AtlanticOnBike – EuroVelo 1 is one of five finalists in its category. It also marks the second consecutive year that a project supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme reached the REGIOSTARS finals, following the success of the AGEO project in 2025.
What's next?
Public vote
The public will once again have the opportunity to choose their favourite project through the People's Choice Award. Voting will open on 3 September and remain available until 14 October at 12:00 (Brussels time).
Final jury presentation
On 13 October, during the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels, the finalists will present their projects to the REGIOSTARS jury and a live audience. This final evaluation will allow each project to showcase its achievements, demonstrate its impact and explain why it deserves to win.
Awards ceremony
The winners of each category, together with the People's Choice Award winner, will be announced during the REGIOSTARS Awards Ceremony on the evening of 14 October, marking the conclusion of the European Week of Regions and Cities.
