The Atlantic Sunset project, led by the Euroregional Studies Centre Foundation (FCEER) and supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, will unveil a new Atlantic Sunset landmark on 14 January at around 17:30 in Ayamonte, Spain.
This new interpretative table highlights Ayamonte as the location of the last Atlantic sunset in peninsular Spain, a phenomenon that occurs annually between 23 October and 18 February. The initiative aims to connect this site with other strategic sunset observation points along the Atlantic coast of Portugal, France and Ireland, laying the foundations for a new transnational route dedicated to the Atlantic sunset.
The opening ceremony is promoted by the Diputación de Huelva, Agencia Destino Huelva, and Ayamonte Municipality, and will be presented by José María Martín Olalla, expert from the University of Seville. These institutions are working together to raise awareness of the territory’s potential, particularly its 7 kilometres of Atlantic beaches, as a sustainable and distinctive tourism destination.
The new table features a graphic representation of the sunset disk and an image identifying key landmarks of Ayamonte, including the castle, salt flats, and Ayamonte marina. It also incorporates a QR code that allows visitors to:
- Discover more about the specific location;
- Explore other sites in the Atlantic Sunset Network;
- Learn about the project’s philosophy of cross-border and international collaboration for sustainable tourism.
