Summary
AWAVES addresses pressing challenges in the Atlantic Region, including the loss of maritime heritage, the growing disconnect between generations, and the devaluation of traditional knowledge. The lack of generational renewal and the waning interest of young people threaten a cultural legacy that is essential to the identity and sustainable development of coastal communities. Moreover, the limited economic and social valorisation of maritime heritage constrains its potential as a true driver of regional development.
Through technology-based immersive experiences, innovative itineraries that weave together heritage, nature, and culture, and digital platforms that bridge tradition and modernity, AWAVES seeks to revitalise the cultural and tourism sectors.
Two key initiatives — Lighthouses of Memory and Travelling Schools — are designed for local communities. They will be embedded within existing spaces such as fish auctions, ports, and fishermen’s guilds, ensuring their continuity as living hubs for the transmission of maritime knowledge. In addition, the project will host festivals that celebrate and renew the vitality of maritime culture.
