The BOTS project, supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area programme, has acquired new equipment to conduct innovative experiments aimed at advancing the use of marine biomass hydrogels in breast cancer research.

This new equipment provides an automated dispensing system, offering significant improvements in precision, reliability, and efficiency, particularly for scaling up organoid culture. Researchers from diverse fields, including marine biology, chemistry, biophysics, and 3D cell culture, will primarily use this system to dispense hydrogels based on biopolymers derived from fish, crustaceans, and algae, selected by the project partners.

These hydrogels are designed to support the growth of specific cell types while providing the physical properties required for advanced bioprinting applications. Through this work, the BOTS team aims to facilitate the large-scale use of marine-based hydrogels for drug testing, through 3D printing technologies, contributing to more sustainable and innovative approaches in biomedical research.
