To help shape the future of Interreg transnational programmes, the ESPON TNCOOP project gathered and analysed a wide range of information about how regions across Europe are developing and working together. The aim is to help programme managers and policymakers understand where transnational cooperation brings the greatest benefits and how it can better address future challenges.
One of the main results of the project is the publication of 13 programme fiches, covering each Interreg transnational cooperation area for the 2021–2027 period, including the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme. Using the same methodology for all programmes, these fiches make it easier to compare territories and understand their economic, social, environmental and governance characteristics. The project also produced an overarching report that looks at the overall value and role of transnational cooperation across Europe.
The research combines statistical data with feedback from programme authorities, European Commission representatives, ESPON experts and other Interreg stakeholders. This approach provides both reliable data and valuable local knowledge, helping to build a clear picture of the opportunities and challenges facing different regions.
The analysis covers topics such as:
• Population trends and housing
• Economic development, innovation and competitiveness
• Environmental sustainability and transport connections
• Governance, citizen participation and cooperation networks
