In the last week of January, the Diputación Provincial de Huelva (Spain), Lead Partner of the project AGREE – Routes of the Great Nautical Expeditions, co-funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, hosted the project’s official launch events. The initiative aims to promote and enhance the historical and cultural heritage linked to the great nautical history of the Atlantic.

The Kick-off Meeting, Steering Committee Meeting and Opening Conference brought together project partners to establish the foundations for cooperation and to define a shared strategic vision. Working groups examined the major Atlantic expeditions from a transnational and network perspective, highlighting the interconnected historical contexts of France, Ireland, Portugal and Spain.

Discussions explored both the historical significance and the contemporary interpretation of this shared maritime legacy, addressing themes such as globalisation, maritime routes, geopolitics and the cultural exchanges shaped by these expeditions.

The programme concluded with a study visit to the Columbus sites of Palos de la Frontera and Moguer — emblematic locations where Christopher Columbus prepared his first voyage to the Americas in 1492.
