The SMART4SEA project, led by the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Cantabria and funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, is developing a new digital platform to support transparent, comparable and reliable environmental indicators for the Atlantic fisheries sector.
Project partners reviewed the latest progress during the Biannual Consortium Meeting, hosted by University College Dublin in June. The meeting provided an opportunity to assess ongoing work, exchange knowledge and coordinate the next steps in the development of the project's environmental traceability system.
The digital platform forms the backbone of SMART4SEA's environmental traceability system. Current developments include vessel registration and data management functionalities, alongside the design of the environmental assessment framework and the Plastic Footprint methodology.
During the meeting, partners discussed the challenges of collecting and integrating data from fisheries operating at different levels of digitalisation. They agreed that closer collaboration on data collection and environmental modelling will be essential to ensure the platform delivers robust, harmonised and reliable environmental assessments across the Atlantic Area.
