Summary
In response to the growing need for sustainable practices in the tourism sector, the CANSTAR project promotes low-impact investments and a focus on climate resilience. It capitalises on the globally recognised starry skies of its territories to create an innovative niche in AstroTourism. The project’s overall objective is to promote sustainable tourism by enhancing star-studded sky resources while reducing light pollution.
Expected changes include improved local economies, preserved natural resources, and better training for tourism professionals.
The project will select dark-sky parks, observatories, and natural reserves as flagship astro-tourism sites to improve. CANSTAR will propose eco-friendly pathways, interpretation panels, and six unique astro-tourism experiences based on culture, astronomy, biodiversity, energy, education, and immersion. The project is also considering accessibility and inclusion measures as tactile maps, audio guides, and wheelchair-accessible facilities.
The partnership represents territories that began some years ago with the astrotourism (Alentejo and Mayo) and other territories in which it has not been developed (Alto Tâmega, Cantabria) or are in a preliminary phase (Millevache, and sites in Andalucia).
