Alentejo hosts kick-off meeting of the CANSTAR project |
|
The Regional Coordination and Development Commission of Alentejo hosted the kick-off of the CANSTAR project, led by the Alentejo Regional Development Agency and supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme. Under Blue Sustainable Tourism and Culture, the project will create an Atlantic Network of Sustainable AstroTourism Destinations across Portugal, Spain, France and Ireland. Flagship sites include the Observatório do Lago Alqueva, promoting dark-sky conservation, reduced light pollution and sustainable tourism practices.

Launch of AGREE – Routes of the Great Nautical Expeditions |
|
In late January, the Diputación Provincial de Huelva (Spain) launched AGREE - Routes of the Great Nautical Expeditions, co-funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme. Partners met to set strategic priorities and explore the shared maritime heritage of France, Ireland, Portugal and Spain. The programme concluded with a visit to the Columbus sites in Palos de la Frontera and Moguer.

Launch of DIGIATLA for building digital capacity in Aquaculture |
|
The DIGIATLA project, supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, held its kick-off meeting at the S2AQUA facilities in Olhão, Portugal, the Lead Partner of the project. Partners from Portugal, Spain, France and Ireland reviewed objectives to boost aquaculture performance through digital training, an online knowledge hub and pilot actions promoting Industry 4.0 solutions. The meeting concluded with a technical visit to the Olhão Fish Farming Pilot Station, in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. |

ATLAS project launches new website on World Whale Day |
|
On World Whale Day 2026 (15 February), the ATLAS project, supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, launched its new website. The project uses existing underwater fibre-optic cables as large-scale environmental sensors, transforming subsea telecom infrastructure into tools for ocean monitoring and protection. The website presents ATLAS objectives, partners and research progress, and invites stakeholders and citizens to follow developments and subscribe to the newsletter. |

A cleaner beach using Artificial Intelligence Algorithms |
|
The BluePoint project, led by the Deputación Foral de Gipuzkoa and supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, has launched an AI-powered app to identify plastic waste on Atlantic beaches. Developed by the Centre for Robotics & Intelligent Systems at the University of Limerick, it combines drone imagery and GPS mapping to enable targeted clean-ups. The system was tested during a clean-up action in County Clare (Ireland), engaging local students and community groups. |

Applications are now open for REGIOSTARS 2026, celebrating outstanding EU-funded projects.
