ACLUNAGA hosted the fourth CONSORTEX Steering Committee meeting

Partners are working to build an export corsortia involving SMEs promoting the competitiveness of the shipbuilding sector

Representatives from the seven partners of the Interreg Atlantic Area CONSORTEX project met in Vigo for a two-day meeting, on the 3rd and 4th of July 2019.

The CONSORTEX’s partners gathered to discuss the project progress and implementation and to push forward the consortium building process. The project aims to form export consortia involving SMEs from the Atlantic Area, promoting the competitiveness of the Shipbuilding Sector.

From onwards, the CONSORTEX’s partnership will work on the consortia composition, based on the results of a survey filled in by companies located in Portugal, Spain, Ireland, France and the UK, site visits and meetings held with the entrepreneurs to explain the objectives of the project.

Once formed the first proposals of the potential consortium, the companies will be invited to participate in meetings across the Atlantic Area. The goal is to hear the companies’ expectations and to start working on the composition of each consortium until they are ready to go to the market. The meetings will start after summer. 

Aside from the discussion on project execution and next steps, the partnership had the opportunity to visit two Spanish’ Shipyards located in Vigo: Freire and Cardama. The tours were hosted by Santiago Sío Dopeso and Xocas Cardama, respectively. The CONSORTEX’ s partners were delighted to know further about these centenarian shipyards, which are specialised in shipbuilding, ship repair and transformation. Both companies are holding projects around the world, building and repairing different types of vessels, namely, Fishing, Tugs, Merchant, Research or Military.

The CONSORTEX project is funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area programme and aims to form export consortia consisting of European interregional SMEs specialised in the manufacture of built-in packages for marine vessels and structures (bridge, engine room, accommodation and deck), including offshore vessels, marine power plants, cruise ships and scientific vessels.

The project is led by Foro Maritimo Vasco, based in Bilbao, Spain, gathering the partners Fórum Oceano (PT), Associação das Indústrias Navais (PT), Cork Institute of Technology (IE), Aclunaga (ES), Bretagne Pôle Naval (FR) and National Maritime (UK).
