OPERATIONAL DATABASE AND FORECASTING FOR MAPPING THE SOLAR RESOURCE

One of the main variables for determining electrical solar energy generation in a region is Global Solar Irradiation. Integration of the solar energy production into the electricity grid requires specific attention in order to maintain the balance between demand and supply because of its variability. Indeed, forecasting solar radiation is an important tool to increase the proportion of solar energy into the power system. On the other hand, all electrical energy must be generated and consumed inside insular grids, such us Gran Canaria, because they are not connected with any other big territories. These networks may present an unstable behaviour if a large-scale of intermittent energy, like solar energy, are generated. In addition, Canary Islands solar radiation presents a high spatio-temporal variability, so an efficient forecasting is becoming an important issue.
The main goal of this Project is to create an operational database of the solar resource for the different regions, calibrated with in-situ measurements of reference, satellite-derived data and NWP data. This solar database would provide GHI, DHI, DNI and Global irradiance in typical planes of array. The historical solar database is updated in real time with satellite images and new in-situ measurements. On the other hand, it provides intra-day solar forecast. The day ahead forecast is provide using NWP models corrected using the historical database in the past.
